My Journey with The Artist’s Way

Greetings fellow travelers,

I’m Buffy and my Indian name is Wabun Anung which means Morning Star. I am Native American enrolled in the Stockbridge-Munsee band of Mohicans tribe. In 1996, I was sitting in Highwind books in Milwaukee. I was in a comfortable chair, sipping green tea, and listening to mesmerizing music when I noticed a book on a nearby table, The Artist’s Way book. I picked it up and as I thumbed through it I felt this was MY book. It spoke to me and I immediately bought it.

My life was more fun and playful as I did the Artist’s Way journey. It was doing little things like buying myself more strawberries, taking a mandala art class, and going to a theater show that gave me a sense of greater abundance in my day to day life.

But it also stimulated BIG changes too! I mustered up the courage to dare to live out my creative dreams…I went back to college at UW-Milwaukee to study drawing and painting post graduate. I began to play my Native American flute publicly in the park. I helped paint a mural and got my picture in the paper! These were so exciting to me!! So when I completed my Artist’s Way journey, I decided to do it again, but this time I joined an online cluster (that no longer exists) to do it with. I loved the interaction!! I dreamed that such a group could be brought to Milwaukee’s creative and artistic people!

In May 26, 2000 I created The Artist’s Way Circle Yahoo! and I have run the group for the last 12 years. As a group we expanded into The Artist’s Way Circle on Facebook. Between both groups there are over 700 subscribers.

Today I write as a Memorist and Poet. I am writing “Two Step” a creative memoir I am writing about a Native American woman finding herself, her higher power, and true love. I write Chick Lit stories in the forms of novel drafts “Step,” “Enigma,” and “Webcam Love.” I also have written a series of poems. My “Woman of the Dawn” poem was published in “First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples: Exploring Their Past, Present, and Future.” John Roberts. Emond Montgomery Publication. 2005

I joined this team because I am really impressed with the site SparkPeople and I am so passionate about the Artist’s Way. I completed 14 twelve week Artist’s Way journeys including a twelve week cycle of Walking in This World. I aspire to begin to start Julia Cameron’s third Artist’s Way book Finding Water this October.

Thanks for having me,
Buffy

New Projects!

I give an update on the latest projects that I am working on. Just completed Walking in This World and have progress to Writing Diet. Working on a business plan to become a freelance writer. August begins Camp NaNoWriMo!

Sparkling Path Walkers

My Culinary Artist Date. Mint water, 1/2 avocado and cheese sandwich on whole grain, salad with organic spinach, strawberries, cantaloupe, grapes, tomatoes, croutons, and cheese.

Greetings fellow travelers,

I began my introduction to “The Writing Diet” by Julia Cameron with a lot of gusto utilizing the 7 Tools! They are:

The First Tool: Morning Pages
The Second Tool: The Journal
The Third Tool: Walking
The Fourth Tool: The Four Questions
The Fifth Tool: Culinary Artist Dates
The Sixth Tool: HALT
The Seventh Tool: The Body Buddy

I knocked it out of the park by writing 7 days out of 7 days Morning Pages. I enjoyed writing my Morning Pages in the morning and getting a lot of emotions out. I am so glad to be continuing this tool from “The Artist’s Way” and “Walking in This World.” Morning Pages are an excellent way for me to get current and to be in the now.

I discovered an easy way to keep a food journal by adding entries of what I ate in my calendar on my cell phone. I carry my cell phone everywhere I go and it’s really convenient. I could select the time I ate and in the title just list all the things I ate for my meal. It’s also easy to track the water that I am drinking as well. Six days of this week I drank a full 8 glasses of water. I use a memo app on my phone when I want to write my feelings about eating on the go.

I walked five 20 minute walks this past week despite the raging heat in the 100s. I either walked at night with my boyfriend when it was cooler or walked inside my apartment building. The night was full of fireflies and racing bunnies that would dart from the bushes.

I utilized the Four Questions a couple of times. Thinking first instead of grabbing food and putting it in my mouth. It gets me to pause and reflect on whether I am hungry or not or whether I could be making a better choice.

My Culinary Artist Date was at Good Harvest Market in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. http://www.goodharvestmarket.com I drank Mint water and ate 1/2 avocado and cheese sandwich on whole grain, salad with organic spinach, strawberries, cantaloupe, grapes, tomatoes, croutons, and cheese. I was able to get 69 cents off my purchase with my Good Harvest Market card.

Using HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) I often find myself eating when I am lonely. I spend a lot of time on the computer seeking a connection. Then I usually think of food. Awareness I believe is the first step in addressing my eating patterns.

I not only have one body buddy but three body buddies who are so encouraging and supportive. Together we are the Sparkling Path Walkers and we lift each other up as we are all going on this journey to greater health. Each of us has all gone through “The Artist’s Way” and “Walking in This World” together so we have 24 weeks walking alongside each other writing our Morning Pages and doing Artist’s Dates. We are all each close to each other. I am so honored to have such loving people I can turn to. I think the relationship I have with these women is fabulous and is the best part of going on this “Writing Diet.”

Also, I have the love and support of several people going on “The Writing Diet” journey with me in The Artist’s Way Circle on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/groups/theartistswaycircle  This special circle brings such joy to my face. Everybody in both my face to face and online circle are a wonderful support system to surround myself with.

Warm regards,
Buffy

Walking in This World Check In June 19, 2012

Greetings fellow travelers,

I first want to extend gratitude for all of you who have been reading and following my check ins as I journey in Walking in This World. I have completed the 12th and final week of Walking in This World. I am amazed how the time just flew by. I am grateful for all the positive friendships I have made along this journey. Thank you to The Artist’s Way Circle and the Sparkling Path Walkers for being so supportive and loving to me as I went on this adventure. The friendships that have developed and grown during this particular journey have been priceless. I feel like such a blessed person to have known you and had the privilege to walk with you as well. Thank you so much.

I wrote 5/7 Morning Pages this past week. I didn’t always write a full three pages because I think I just was ready for the 12 week cycle to come to an end.

My Artist’s Date I would have liked to have was a chance to see George Takei (Mr. Sulu) at the Lakefront Festival of the Arts in Milwaukee, WI. Unfortunately, I did not have sufficient funds to make this happen. But I did enjoy viewing pictures of the festival including one with George Takei standing next to a sculpture of a woman at the Milwaukee Art Museum. What I ended up doing was playing online games because they were free. I have been a long time fan of Hidden Chronicles since the game first came out. I like solving hidden puzzle games. Some of the artwork in the scenes are so beautiful including some wonderful music. Many scenes take you to places around the world and of different cultures. Lately, I have been also playing a lot of Bingo because it helps take my mind off my worries.

I did some my walking around my neighborhood from the clinic to my home and also around the downtown area. As of right now it’s still spring and we have had some cool and refreshing walking weather.

Issue of recovery is planning for the right next step. I have talked with members of The Artist’s Way Circle and there are a few that want to do the “Writing Diet” by Julia Cameron. I am interested in putting my health number one this summer so I also would like to do the Writing Diet. I was thinking for the food journaling I could take pictures of the food that I am going to eat using my smart phone. I also would like to use the Kindle App for PC and Android phone to purchase a Kindle version of the “Writing Diet” for $7.99. This will be the first Kindle purchase for me and I am interesting to see how it will turn out. In July 11th I am planning a special celebration for my birthday. In August I am going to be a Camp NaNoWriMo rebel and rewrite my romance novel “Two Step” a story of a Native American woman searching for herself, her higher power, and true love .I am doing “Finding Water,” Julia Cameron’s 3rd Artist’s Way book in the Fall.  From now til December I plan on working on my business plan. I feel that the time is right to focus on this project now and I believe that I can accomplish this goal within 6 months. I plan to use this blog and my YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/azurebreezes to share my progress on my journey of self employment. So many wonderful things coming up. Please stay tuned for the latest developments.

Warm regards,
Buffy

Bead and Button Show Milwaukee Wisconsin

Greetings fellow travelers,

I wrote four days out of seven days in my Morning Pages this past week. This is my week 11 check in and I am eager to complete my journey.

For my Artist’s Date I went to the Bead and Button Show. This is my second time going to this particular show. First time I went was three years ago and I was overwhelmed by the size. I previously spent all day and only managed to get through half the show. This time I was aware of the enormity of the event so I decided to take a more leisurely approach. This time I was much more interested in talking to the people around me and looking for opportunities to take some pictures of some work that caught my eye. The two pictures above were the favorites I saw and took pictures at this year’s Bead and Button show. I collected some business cards and I had a nice conversation with a woman who came to the show from Chicago for the first time. I found the food to be very expensive. I spent $14.75 for a cheeseburger, garlic Parmesan fries and a large RC Cola. Good thing though that I had a ride for a $1 and free admission ticket for the show. Might plan to eat a larger meal before I go to the show next time. Overall though it was good to get out to Milwaukee for a nice trip. I love looking at the sparkle of beads.

After the Bead and Button Show I went to Marasco’s Craft King Brookfield, Wisconsin. It was an old fashioned craft store but the prices were really good. I picked up some purple pony beads for a beaded medallion I want to make. I noticed this little bear at the store and snapped a picture.

I spent over an hour walking around the Bead and Button show for my walk. Later I was exhausted and took a nap.

Issue of recovery is while I am grateful for almost being done with my journey in Walking in This World, I am sad that my journey with such wonderful people is ending soon. I really enjoyed the mix of people in my online and face to face Walking in This World journeys. I hope we continue to keep in contact.

Warm regards,
Buffy

Walking in This World Check In June 7, 2012

Greetings fellow travelers,

I first wanted to talk about the video I attached to this post. During the summer every Friday downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin come together to celebrate Friday Night Live with lots of live music. In addition to Friday Night Live, on June 1, 2012 there was an additional celebration honoring Waukesha as Gibson Guitar Town. All throughout Waukesha are these 10 foot tall guitars decorated by local artists. While all this was going on there was also a flash mob brought on by the local Waukesha High School Orchestra in the middle of Clinton and Main St. Lots of excitement going on around town. This video is about the Flash Mob.

A picture I took of one of the artistically decorated 10 ft tall guitars celebrating Waukesha as Guitar Town. This guitar is located at the corner of Clinton and Main St. in downtown Waukesha, WI.

With that said I took off a week during Memorial Day Week. It was a nice break. Today I am doing the check in for week 10 in Walking in This World by Julia Cameron.

I did four out of seven days worth of Morning Pages. Taking off a week threw the momentum of my journey off and took awhile to get back into again.

My Artist’s Date was to play a lot of Bingo. I actually came in first place during one game. The Bingo caller sounded like a pirate. I generally like to play with three bingo cards at the same time. Anything less it’s too boring and anymore is more too challenging to keep up. Three cards is a nice steady pace I can keep up and still have a moment to breath. I enjoyed myself a lot. I sometimes like activities like this that help me to focus on something other than my worries and fears. It takes my mind off my problems.

I had a long 30 minute walk from the clinic to my house. I took a leisurely pace and paused many times on my journey. The air was refreshingly cool and very comfortable weather to walk in.

During the month of May in the writing streak challenge I wrote 30,000 words. I didn’t realize I wrote so much until I kept track of it all.

My issue of recovery is to give myself credit for what I do and accomplish. I find myself constantly cutting myself down not taking the time to assess all that I am doing right. I often feel that I am not good enough. While there are so many people around me that keep telling me I do good work. These people are good people and I think I should listen to what they are saying about me.

Warm regards,
Buffy

Walking in This World Check-In May 22, 2012

Greetings fellow travelers,

I was able to write 6 days out of 7 days worth of  Morning Pages this week. I could feel myself emotionally shutting down in the middle week from negative comments from a few people. However, I managed to pull myself out of it and express my true feelings. I am grateful to my face to face Artist’s Way group, the Sparkling Path Walkers, for helping me to address the negative comments that were spoken to me.

For my Artist’s Date,  I spent an hour developing my Map plan to find direction in my Artist’s journey. I have recently uncovered a video on the right brain business plan and a live webcast on how to find your YouTube audience that helped me to address issues that are surfacing in my Map. I wanted to spend more time working on my Map but unforeseen circumstances appeared.

I walked two short walks around my neighborhood. The air was cool and refreshing. I enjoy walking in springtime weather. Summer is just around the corner though.

Issues of recovery was to not let negativity from others to destroy my self worth. A synchronicity was that Julia Cameron recently posted on Facebook the following quote “I do not allow the thoughtless or unwarranted behavior of others to cause me to doubt or forget my own worth.” I reflected upon this and I thought her words really did applied to my situation.

Warm regards,

Buffy
